A commanding presence, the Sancai Dragon-Eared Vase showcases a striking fusion of eastern and western influences, rooted in the cosmopolitan culture of the Tang dynasty (618–907). With its elongated ovoid body, broad neck, and magnificent dragon-shaped handles, this vase embodies both elegance and power.

The vase’s dragon ears hint at its western origins, as this form was inspired by West Asian vessel shapes that became popular in China during the Tang dynasty. During this period, exotic motifs and forms became fashionable, reflecting the cultural exchanges along the Silk Road. While the shape itself nods to distant lands, the dragon motif firmly grounds it in Chinese tradition, symbolising imperial authority and spiritual power.

One of the most captivating elements is the large medallion (宝相華文) affixed to three sides of the body. The flowing green and brown glazes cascade down the body, intermingling with areas of white slip (蠟抜き), which add a dramatic contrast to the vibrant colours.

The dragon handles are meticulously crafted, with each scale and ridge highlighted by selective glazing, creating a sense of movement and vitality. The glaze distribution on the dragon heads and backs reveals the artisan’s deliberate attention to detail and technique, where glazes were carefully controlled and allowed to flow naturally, echoing the organic fluidity of the dragon.

In essence, this vase is a monumental masterpiece—not only in its size and craftsmanship but in its embodiment of a cultural dialogue between East and West. It stands as a testament to the Tang dynasty’s openness to foreign aesthetics while simultaneously asserting Chinese artistic ingenuity.
